Welcome!

First Unitarian Church of Baltimore is the spiritual home of a diverse and mutually supportive community of people
who strive to build on our deep historical roots as a congregation
 to be a beacon of hope, social justice, and liberal religious values in Baltimore and in the world

Our Church Family

As a diverse congregation united by core values, we come from various religious, ethnic, and racial backgrounds. All people are valued here. As individuals and as a congregation, we benefit from our differences.

Our Church Life and Ministry

Our congregation offers a wide range of activities and programs to nurture growth and meaning in our lives. Religious education for  children teaches - through action - honoring religious pluralism, social justice, reason, and compassion.

Adult offerings deepen our "Journeys of the Mind and Spirit," while Covenant Groups and small Discussion Groups fit our varied interests and needs.

Opportunities abound for creative service both within the church through our Volunteer Program and the community at large through our Social Action Clearinghouse.

Our ministers lead many of our programs and are available for weddings and unions, baby namings, and memorial services, as is our sanctuary.

Our Neighborhood

We are located in Mt. Vernon, the premier cultural/historic district of Baltimore. Within a couple of blocks are the Walters Art Museum, the Pratt Library, the Washington Monument and many other places worth a visit. Also in our neighborhood are many interesting restaurants.

Our Governance

Unitarian Universalist churches are self-governing with authority and responsibility vested in the membership. We elect our Board of Trustees, own our buildings, plan and support our own programs, and generally make major decisions as a congregation. We believe it is our responsibility to support our church and faith with a measure of our time, talent, and treasure.

You have come to the right church if you want a religion that:

  • Respects differences among people;
  • Cherishes freedom and encourages open dialogue on questions of faith;
  • Recognizes ambiguity and change;
  • Affirms spiritual exploration and reason as ways of finding truth;
  • Does not ask you to subscribe to a creed;
  • Seeks to act as a moral force in the world, believing that ethical living is the supreme witness of religion

Joining our Church

We welcome all who seek a community of free thought, mutual respect, and affirmation of the human spirit. If you are contemplating joining the church and would like more information, please visit our Membership Table after services. To give you a better understanding of the Unitarian Universalist religion and tradition, we also offer a Beginnings Class.
