>>> Why I Am a Unitarian Universalist: by First Unitarian Young Adults >>>

Faith and Fellowship Development

Ours is a faith that recognizes ambiguity and change. Therefore, our faith journey is one that takes a lifetime.
We take parts of the journey alone, but we understand the importance of community in addressing the questions the universe asks us.
We gather as a community to find spiritual renewal and to support the work of making peace, bringing justice, and deepening our faith.

Unless otherwise specified, contact the church office for information: Church Office

Adult Education

Our mission: "The First Unitarian Church of Baltimore's Lifespan Religious Education program provides opportunities for the community to connect and join together to explore transformational education as we practice growing into a better world."
Our congregation offers classes and events in Unitarian Universalist history, principles and theology as well as wisdom from other world religions and critical issues facing our society today. An array of programs - from classes to open forums to small groups and informal discussions - reflect the diversity and interests of members and friends in our community.  Contact: Becky Brooks, Director of Lifespan Religious Education.

Beginnings Class

Several time each year, we have a gathering for people who want to learn more about our Church, our faith, our history, and how one becomes a member. Come meet new people while learning about Unitarian Universalism at the same time. Participants are not obligated to join the church after attending the Beginnings Class.  See our church calendar for the next Beginnings Class or check with a church member at the Welcome Table in the Pratt Parish Hall any Sunday after the church service. Sign up at the Welcome Table or email: Membership. We provide childcare if it is requested two weeks in advance.

Book Group

Led by our Affiliate Minister, Michael Franch, the group meets on the 4th Thursday of the month (except Nov and Dec) in a member's home. To participate, contact: Michael Franch

Fun and fellowship for the whole family. Cabaret Photos

Choir

Join the Choir and enjoy singing on Sundays and special occasions. Our choir provides anthems, leads the congregation in songs from our hymnal, and sometimes gives us the gift of a solo rendition. They also produce an original Cabaret, one of the most entertaining events of the year. The choir claims to be the group that has the most fun, but you'll have to find that out for yourself. Cooking

Do you like to feed a crowd? Join Helen and her crew whenever we have luncheons or dinners at church. And on the 5th Saturday of the month, Helen coordinates cooking at the church for the needy at "Our Daily Bread." No skills needed. Contact: Helen Szymkowiak

Dream Group

A lay group for those interested in exploring the meaning of their dreams, the Dream Group has been meeting continuously since 1987. Our dreamwork model is based on the educational and literary work of Rev. Jeremy Taylor. We meet once each month on the third Sunday, or as arranged with Dream Group members, in the Dream Room, 12:30-2:30 p.m. Leader: Alice Lium

Interweave

Part social, part political, part educational, and part religious and spiritual, Interweave is an informal group of First Unitarian congregants who represent and support the ideas and issues of concern to members of our congregation who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered, and their allies and friends. Interweave accomplishes its mission through a changing array of interests, both inside and outside the congregation, including hosting and co-sponsoring special events, supporting local lobbying and activist organizations, and providing leadership for the June Pride service at our church. Contact Chair: Vernon Rey

Neighborhood Circles

Members who live in geographic proximity get to know and value one another at fun social gatherings several times a year. Through Neighborhood Circles we strengthen our caring connections to each another. Find your Circle here, or contact Carolyn Battle

Other UU Activities/Events

Want to know about events and special programs at UU churches in the Baltimore metropolitan area? Check out  Wellspring, the weekly column by member, Adrian Hilliard, in the Examiner online.

Adrian considers himself a "Uvangelist" and shares Unitarian Universalism with all. He loves learning about people's different religious journeys. Through his writing on Examiner.com, he hopes to share what he thinks are interesting articles and commentary that provide information to Unitarian Universalists and other Religious Liberals. If you have something to share, send it to Adrian.

Pastoral Associates Program
Pastoral Associates are church members who are trained to extend the pastoral care of the church by helping members who have a special need. The one-to-one caring and helping activities may address such special needs as:

  • health problems, illness, or hospitalization
  • isolation because of age, mobility problems, disability, or other factors
  • death of a family member or friend
  • follow-up and maintenance after crisis intervention and counseling by the minister or other trained professional

This program of pastoral care is a ministry of presence and support. It is not pastoral counseling or therapy.

If you, or someone you know, is in need of pastoral care, please feel free to:

  • call either the dedicated cell phone line at 410-350-9959, or the church office at 410-685-2330.
  • email Pastoral Associates

The first group of trained Pastoral Associates are Doreion Colter, Pat Evans, Lauralee Humphrey, Dale Lantz, Ursula Marcum, and Donna DiSciullo (Coordinator).  We work closely with Rev. Olson and the Neighborhood Caring Circles.

Young Adults

Be part of a network of active church members in their twenties and thirties. The Young Adult Group is represented in various committees and on the Board of Trustees. The group also organizes social events and reaches out to newcomers. The best time to meet members of the group is during coffee hour after Sunday services. To find out what the group is planning, contact:
Chair: Whitney Novak.
