Youth Religious Education

“Out of the stars in their flight, out of the dust of eternity, here we have come; Stardust and sunlight, mingling through time and through space…Ponder this thing in your heart; ponder with awe… Eyes to behold, throats to sing, mates to love; This is the wonder of time; this is the marvel of space; out of the stars swung the earth; life upon earth rose to love.” — Robert T. Weston (Singing the Living Tradition #530 and painted along the walls of the youth room)

It is the philosophy of youth and adults at First Unitarian that youth should take the lead in designing and implementing their own programming. Youth in seventh grade and up are encouraged to participate in the Youth Adult Committee (YAC), which works to guide activities and events for the youth group.

In 2009 the YAC designed and led a “Soulful Sundown” worship service, “Of Dirt and Seeds,” for the whole community. The youth also hosted a fundraising concert for the Fuel Fund of Maryland on Valentine’s Day - recap and photos.

This year the youth will continue their popular role play gaming activity on Sunday mornings, led by Andre Mendes. Beginning in January, youth in 7th-9th grades are invited to participate in the Our Whole Lives Sexuality Education program, which meets weekly through May. The YAC meets after church on the first Sunday of each month and will govern extra activities, events and programs for the group.
