Social Action ~ Social Justice

The Social Action Clearinghouse

First Unitarian's Social Action Clearinghouse (SAC) initiates programs while supporting congregation members and community organizations working to achieve social justice and peace in accordance with Unitarian Universalist Seven Principles. The SAC's signature programs are Change for Change, which contributes half the undesignated Sunday collection to nonprofit organizations enhancing the quality of life in Baltimore, and the Baltimore Social Action Awards: Celebrating Beacons of Hope in Baltimore and the World. The SAC also encourages advocacy for national, state and local policies that align with UU principles, and hosts educational forums about timely issues such as humane treatment of immigrants and climate change.

The SAC works with other social justice coalitions and networks, including Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ), Baltimore Regional Initiative Developing Genuine Equality (BRIDGE) and Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of Maryland (UULM). The group supports First Unitarian members involved with local programs such as Our Daily Bread and the Banner Neighborhood Reading Program.

The SAC is creating Action Groups to work on specific issues including Prison Outreach and Environmental Justice. The Clearinghouse also awards small grants for internal and external social action projects from the Seven Principles Social Justice Fund, a bequest set aside for use of the SAC.

Visit the SAC's new blog - SoAct - to learn more about the social action activities of First Unitarian members and be part of the conversation about creating a just, peaceful and sustainable world.
