The Unitarian Universalist Denomination

The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) www.uua.org

The UUA was formed in 1961 through the consolidation of two faith traditions, the Universalist Church of America, organized in 1793, and the American Unitarian Association, organized in 1825. Today the UUA is a religious family of more than 1,000 congregations that support each other and bring to the world a theology of tolerance, interdependence, and compassion.

UUA serves and strengthens congregations.

UUA provides services that individual congregations would find difficult, if not impossible, to provide by themselves.

  • Assists in recruiting qualified ministers and planning ministerial transitions.
  • Develops religious education curricula for children, youth, and adults, as well as continuing education programs for religious educators.
  • Provides congregational leaders with church management resources, including conferences for large, mid-size, and small congregations and the InterConnections newsletter.

Our Congregation and UUA

While we are an independent church, we hold voluntary membership in UUA. To take advantage of the many services this greater community provides, we pay dues each year based on the number of members we have.

The Joseph Priestly District of the UUA (JPD) www.jpd.uua.org

JPD provides services for 65 congregations in Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, DC, and Northern Virginia including:

  • Consultation on fundraising
  • Personnel compensation
  • Meeting and retreat facilitation
  • Advice to ministerial search committees

Community ministries in the JPD district:

  • Beacon House Community Ministry: civic and social service organization that supports the youth and families of the Ward Five Communities in Northeast Washington, D.C.
  • UU Affordable Housing Corporation (UUAHC): a community development loan fund addressing the need for affordable housing, transitional housing, and childcare facilities in the JPD region.
  • Unitarian Universalist House of the Joseph Priestley District: a non-profit long term care community offering personal care, assisted living and skilled nursing care in a home-like setting.
