This position presents an opportunity to help our congregation evaluate a new church and religious education model, with religious education offered to all ages during the first hour of church, followed by a whole-congregation worship service. The goal is to integrate intergenerational engagement in all aspects church life. We are seeking an individual to help us to accomplish these goals by bringing fresh ideas, energy, and the interim perspective to the role. The successful candidate will work in consultation with our minister, Board of Directors, Children’s RE Committee, Adult Religious Education Committee, and lay leaders to help us initiate and evaluate this exciting new church model.

At the same time, we are looking for someone who can help us assess our church’s religious education needs and values through the traditional interim DRE process. Volunteers are at the ready to manage the day-to-day activities, including teaching RE classes, coordinating church-wide and sub-group specific events, and communicating with volunteers and the church at large. We had the advantage of a seven-month interim period, which began this process.

First Unitarian Church of Baltimore has approximately 190 adult members and 55 children and youth. Currently a typical Sunday serves about 15 school age children and 8 preschool children. We also have an established youth program that meets monthly. We have just completed a very successful middle school OWL program that served 10 youth and are planning for a high school OWL course next spring.

Our urban setting in downtown Baltimore has positioned us well for many generations of active social justice work, which is manifested in both the children and adult membership. We have been actively engaged in healing our community after the Freddie Grey uprisings and at the same time lead and participate in a variety of outreach projects to our impoverished and homeless neighbors.

As a historic congregation in a historic building, we hold several cherished and important services throughout the year for the entire Joseph Priestly District, including annual Union Service, which marks the landmark William Ellery Channing Sermon. We are actively planning three bicentennial celebrations for 2017 (founding), 2018 (dedication of the sanctuary), and 2019 (the Channing Sermon). Our beautiful building is the oldest continuously operating Unitarian church in the country, and the home of the Channing pulpit. It sits in the heart of historic downtown Baltimore with its many cultural offerings from museums to theater.

The congregation’s religious education program was nurtured for the last nine years by Becky Brooks, a well-regarded and talented UU religious educator. As a result, the church has two strong and talented RE committees that have been working hard to prepare for the coming church year.

Compensation for this position is in the UUA recommended midrange for commensurate levels of RE experience or certification.  More details are available upon application. Readjustments of responsibilities and expectations are to be expected during the interview and negotiation process to reflect the needs of the congregation and the applicant during the interim period. We are seeking a creative person to help us clarify our core values, strengthen our commitment to our beloved spiritual community, and move ahead during this exciting interim period.

This is a halftime, salaried position. The interim religious education director will report to the Board of Trustees, including monthly reports. The position provides a benefits package that includes health care, disability and life insurance, and retirement. In addition, 10 percent of the salary is allocated for professional expenses.
